McBrayer One Name Study

Scope

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the McBrayer surname and ALL its variants. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect--and those that don't. Please contact the project leader, add categories to your profiles, add your questions to the bulletin board, add details of your name research, etc.

How to Join

Please contact the project co-manager Eric Weddington or post a comment. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks!

Adding a Profile to this Study

In general, please avoid adding every McBrayer profile to this Study. See List of McBrayer Profiles below, to get a sorted list of every McBrayer profile on WikiTree.

Add a McBrayer profile to this study only if their McBrayer ancestor is currently unknown. To add your ancestor to this study, simply include the following template to the Biography section of his or her profile:

{{One Name Study|name=McBrayer|category=McBrayer Name Study}}

Once the profile is connected to the main McBrayer family line (see Oldest in the United States below), then remove the template from the profile.

Goals

  1. Source any unsourced family member
  2. Connect any unconnected family member to one of the oldest McBrayer lineages in the United States
  3. Discover the relationship between the oldest McBrayer individuals within the United States and any immigration to the United States

McBrayer Genealogy

History

Supposedly, James Knot McBrayer and his wife Jane Montgomery traveled from Ireland to Pennsylvania, either in the late 1600s or early 1700s. They have three sons, William, David, and James who were either born in Ireland or in Pennsylvania. See the Descendant List of James Knot McBrayer for more information.

From what we can tell so far, is that all McBrayers in the United States can be traced to this family. There is still much work to be done on properly sourcing and connecting McBrayer profiles to confirm this assertion.

Name Variants

It seems that the descendants of David McBrayer, who is the third son of William McBrayer (see History, above), all changed their last names to either Brier or Briar. These name variants should be noted.

There is also another branch that is going by MacBrayer. See the profile for Lewis Burgin MacBrayer, Jr. and the photo of his gravestone.

I'd like to be involved in the McBrayer family study and work on it as I have time. I am descended from Drucilla McBrayer Green b. 1755 in North Carolina and would like to see if any research has uncovered a link to her birth family. I manage a few profiles on your list and am related collaterally to several others. Thanks! --Kathleen
